COMUNICATO STAMPA (ENGLISH VERSION BELOW) Fabio Paris Art Gallery presenta EVA E FRANCO MATTES (0100101110101101.ORG) "LOL" Mostra e catalogo a cura di Domenico Quaranta OPENING sabato 20 gennaio, ore 18.00 Dal 20 gennaio al 3 marzo 2007 Orari e giorni di apertura della galleria: 15-19 tutti i giorni escluso festivi In occasione della loro seconda personale presso la Fabio Paris Art Gallery, EVA E FRANCO MATTES (0100101110101101.ORG) propongono – per la prima volta in Italia - il progetto con cui si sono aggiudicati il Premio New York 2006. Per più di un anno, Eva e Franco Mattes hanno vissuto nel mondo virtuale di Second Life, esplorando il suo territorio e interagendo con i suoi bizzarri abitanti. Il risultato di questa "deriva" videoludica è una serie di ritratti caratterizzati dai colori brillanti, le luci artificiali, le forme poligonali e le prospettive surreali tipiche dei mondi virtuali. Nel loro insieme, questi ritratti mettono in luce i progressi tecnologici che permettono la creazione di identità alternative all'interno dei mondi simulati. "LOL" fa parte della ricerca avviata con "13 Most Beautiful Avatars", un progetto espositivo che ha coinvolto lo spazio reale dell'Italian Academy di New York e quello virtuale della galleria Ars Virtua (a cura di Rhizome.org); e che proseguirà a febbraio con la loro seconda personale presso la Postmasters Gallery di New York. "LOL" propone cinque ritratti e un trittico, tutti dedicati ad avatar femminili. La sigla posta a titolo della mostra è un'espressione molto utilizzata nelle comunità online per esprimere divertimento, allegria ("Laugh Out Loud" o "Lots Of Laughs") o come clausola di saluto ("Lots Of Love"). Rifiutandosi di spiegare il senso di questa loro appropriazione di un ready-made della comunicazione in Rete, i Mattes lasciano aperte le porte all'interpretazione: un linguaggio artificiale per forme di vita artificiali? Un moto di sarcasmo per ogni tentativo di interpretare un lavoro che va valutato soprattutto per il suo impatto estetico? O piuttosto la rivelazione che l'allegria apparente ed esibita dei mondi virtuali cela invece una profonda inquietudine, un fondo di tragedia che emerge, di quando in quando, da questi volti di abbacinante bellezza? In occasione della mostra, la galleria pubblicherà il libro "Portraits", che ripercorre tutte le tappe di questa operazione. For over a year Eva and Franco Mattes lived in the virtual world of Second Life, exploring its terrain and interacting with its peculiar inhabitants. The result of this "video game flânerie" is a series of portraits characterized by the bright colors, artificial lighting, polygonal shapes and surreal perspectives typical of virtual worlds. Overall, the series draws on the technological developments which allow the creation of alternate identities within simulated worlds. "LOL" carries on the work that began with "13 Most Beautiful Avatars", an exhibition project that involved the physical space of the Italian Academy in New York and the virtual space of Ars Virtua Gallery (curated by Rhizome.org), and is set to continue in February with the Mattes’ second solo exhibition at Postmasters Gallery in New York. "LOL" features five portraits and a triptych, all dedicated to female avatars. The title of the show is an expression much used by the online community to express amusement or jollity ("Laugh Out Loud" or "Lots Of Laughs") or as a closing greeting ("Lots Of Love"). The fact that the Mattes duo refuse to explain the meaning of this ready-made of web communications leaves it open for interpretation: an artificial language for artificial life forms? A touch of sarcasm towards attempts to interpret a work that should be assessed primarily from the aesthetic point of view? Or rather the revelation that behind the display of apparent high spirits virtual worlds conceal a profound sense of anxiety, an underlying tragedy that at times emerges from these dazzlingly beautiful faces? On occasion of the exhibition the gallery is to publish the book "Portraits", which explores all the stages of this work.
